Most of us have health insurance even though we hope we never need it. Car insurance, too. We usually put away a little money to cover unexpected expenses, not because we know bad things will happen, but because they might. Planning for emergencies is like having a little insurance or savings, if an emergency comes the preparation could save your life and the lives of your loved ones. How much is that worth?
Emergency kits are a way for you to take a little of the uncertainty away in times of crisis. Often, you have very little time to do anything other than grab and go and that is why many kits are called "go bags" or "grab and go" kits. On your way out the door, you simply grab the kit and take it with you. You don't have to wonder if you have a radio or flashlight. Cell phone? Food? Basic medical supplies? If you did a little work up front, you know you have what you need and you can leave immediately.
In natural disasters, help will eventually come, but time and again, we have been told that you need to provide for the first 72 hours on your own. It takes that long for the rescue services to get moving and on site. Think about it, to survive for 72 hours isn't that hard if you have a few things ready, like basic food and supplies, but without them, even a short time can be very difficult or even life threatening. Isn't it better to be safe?
We have selected many of the items we think you'll need and they are offered here. Everyone's situation is different in some ways but in general, you know how likely you are to face a crisis. If you live in one of the hurricane zones, you definitely need to plan ahead and often for longer durations than 72 hours, in many other areas a smaller emergency kit will do but it never hurts to get a little more than you absolutely need, the cost is low, the benefits are high.
